For starters, silicones are the material of choice to coat airbags, as we have already mentioned in a previous blog post. Proof of this is that 1 out of every 4 cars on the road worldwide uses Elkem Silicones’ products.

Calculating variables

Now let’s crunch some numbers. A typical airbag is coated with 25g/m2 of silicone and coatings can be applied at high speeds of up to 100m/min.  For every 200kg drum of silicone we produce, airbag manufacturers will coat enough airbag fabric to cover an entire football field, which comes to a total of 8,000 airbags. Over the course of 20 years, more than 1,000,000,000m2 of airbag fabric has been coated with our silicone products. Try and imagine that in terms of soccer fields!

Recognitions in Europe

Since 2008, Elkem Silicones has been making waves with its silicone innovations and these waves have rolled in a number of awards for the company. The Airbag 2000+ tradeshow, for instance, has set the scene for two of Elkem Silicones’ awards. Started in 1992 and held every two years by the Fraunhofer ICT in Karlsruhe, Germany, this tradeshow brings together major players in airbag development and application. In both 2008 and 2014, Elkem Silicones was honored with the best technical poster award.

Recognitions from other parts of the globe

Elkem Silicones has also received a few awards from other regions of the globe, namely from China. In 2015, Elkem Silicones received an award for its airbags applications from the China National Chemical Corporation, commonly known as ChemChina, a conglomerate of chemical companies in various fields including automotive tires.

Then in 2016, the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), a science research institute founded in 1985 to help the government manage China’s automotive industry, rated Elkem Silicones as a “Model Green Company in China”. This rating promotes the application of green practices and green materials in the automobile industry. It recognizes Elkem Silicones’s commitment to providing non-toxic and solvent-free solutions in every step of the production process.
